Job Description

Purpose:      

The Environmental Manager position exists to provide consistent direction, implementation and governance of EHS process systems in order to ensure commitment and compliance to established law, regulation, policy, procedure, rule and contract.  Selected candidate will be responsible for managing the environmental program and improvement efforts for the facility, while ensuring full compliance with all state, federal and local regulatory requirements.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Provide leadership in Safety Excellence and “Be Safe from the Start”. 
  • Implement and lead Environmental improvements by following Verso’s Operational Excellence business model. 
  • Manage the operation and performance of Escanaba’s Mill solid, air, water, and hazardous waste programs in a manner which will ensure the mill is in compliance with all regulations.
  • Lead annual planning/training for the mill’s Emergency Preparedness and Response program.
  • Develop and implement management systems, training programs, policies, procedures, and audits.
  • Provide input and direction to management on critical environmental issues and assist in the development of strategic direction.
  • Serve as key contact with regulatory agencies, industry groups, and non-governmental organizations including responding to environmental complaints.
  • Develop budgets to maintain regulatory compliance cost effectively and strategies to meet future compliance requirements while enhancing Verso s competitive strengths and advantages.
  • Demonstrate strong technical and regulatory understanding for all environmental media.
  • Manage the mills permits and ensure reports and renewal applications are submitted as required.
  • Ensuring the mill's landfills are maintained according to the landfill plans of operations.
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with leaders in the mill and across the company as necessary to achieve best practices and ensure alignment.
  • Enforce adherence to safe work practices, good housekeeping, provide follow-up and correction of unsafe acts and conditions, and actively participate in departmental safety programs and meetings.
  • Lead, develop and mentor the environmental engineers.

Job Requirements

Minimum Required Experience and Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Paper Science Engineering or related field.
  • Five to ten years’ experience in an EHS function while working in a manufacturing environment.
  • Knowledge in FDA regulations applicable to paper manufacturing.
  • Possess strong verbal, written, interpersonal, and analytical skills.
  • Ability to interact with a wide variety of people including regulators, contractors, consultants, all levels of Verso employees, and the public.
  • Have strong computer skills in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
