Job Description

Purpose:      

Responsible for the management of all chemicals/raw materials, dyes, energy, purchased pulp and contracted services.  This position works closely with corporate purchasing to manage corporate contracts at a local level.  This position is expected to participate in providing strategic direction to the mill procurement process and represent mill interests in multi-mill purchasing activities.  Position has rapidly changing priorities and multiple projects at the same time.  Incumbent must deal with fluctuating operating requirements, changing markets, evolving products, suppliers and continuous negotiations with internal customers and suppliers. 

Key Accountabilities:

  • Optimize the material handling of raw materials to meet paper machine and pulp mill requirements while managing inventory levels.
  • Analyzes present and potential usage requirements, current inventory status information, lead times, and shipping methods to determine optimum purchase situations and appropriate inventory adjustment levels. Oversee Working Capital targets for raw materials.
  • Direct orders to supply sources that best meet the needs of the mill. 
  • Consult with materials, logistics and production resources to determine specifications for items to be purchased.
  • Coordinate shipments to ensure the most effective use of inbound trucks and railcars and follow up to ensure on time delivery.
  • Work with corporate purchasing on specifications and mill requirements to optimize the value derived from the materials and services purchased through the corporate purchasing process.
  • Work with and support the activities of the corporate purchasing staff to negotiate and implement contracts for multi-mill commodities.  Participate in negotiations with corporate purchasing as needed. 
  • Provide input to the corporate purchasing group on vendor changes and vendor performance.
  • Work with Technical Service and Product Development to submit new materials into Comply for Safety and Environmental approval.
  • Process contracted services purchase orders and ensure service providers are approved to work on site.
  • Ability to handle tight deadlines and make risk/benefit decisions is essential.

Job Requirements

Minimum Required Experience and Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in chemical engineering, supply management, business or related field or at least 5 years of experience in Purchasing or similar field preferred (e.g. storeroom, finance, or supply chain).
  • Good knowledge of paper/pulp raw material and production processes.
  • Knowledge of purchasing process and procedures and key commercial terms such as freight payables, incoterms and delivery terms.
  • Possess excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Communicate with all levels of the organization, vendors and suppliers.
  • Excellent organizational and planning skills.
  • Experience/understanding using SAP or ERPs, Microsoft Office Suite including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
